Bay pair sweep all before them to land doubles title

Herne Bay enjoyed success as the East Kent Doubles Championsh­ips were held at Deal ITC, winning the ladies trophy and finishing runners-up in the men’s.

The format of the competitio­n was for each pair to play two short sets to four plus a 10-point tie-break, if needed.

Bay representa­tives Nicola Mileham and Anne Gibbs were in devastatin­g form and beat the pair from the host club 4-0, 4-0, before taking on the defending champions from Hythe and beating them 4-2, 4-0.

Finally they played a pair from Canterbury/broadstair­s and beat them 4-0, 4-1, to take the title.

In the men’s competitio­n Graham Miles and Alex Kazakeos struggled initially in their first match against a pair from Broadstair­s but finally won 2-4, 5-3 and 10-6 in the tie-break.

They then lost heavily to the defending champions from Deal but beat a pair from Sandwich 4-2, 4-2, to finish as runners-up in the men’s competitio­n.
