Holman in the mix for Prince’s prizes

Darren Holman had a day to remember as St Stephen’s Golf Society visited Prince’s on Friday. The 10-handicappe­r won with 37 points and also took a nearest the pin and, playing with partner Nigel Stevenson, won the fourball pairs competitio­n. Holman finished a shot ahead of runner-up Dave Gregory (h24) with Andy Oxberry in third with 34 playing off 15, pipping Antony Back (h7) on countback. All bar one player scored 30 points on a good day while Steve Girdwood took the other nearest the pin. The society’s next match is at Etchinghil­l on Saturday. New members are always welcome.

Will Ferneyhoug­h was the overall winner as Chestfield GC hosted a charity five-club competitio­n for the Ted Gladdish Trophy on Sunday. The 18-handicappe­r led the 13-28 handicap section with 38 points, two clear of Barry Mankelow, who pipped Ray Taylor on countback with Ben Cook in fourth with 35. Winner of the low handicap section, with 37 points, was Ashton Evans, two ahead of runner-up Richard Gunner who beat Gianni Vitiello and Peter Newman on countback. The Chestfield Ladies Stableford was won by Linda Neesham, with 34 points. Runner-up a point behind was Sally Levis, who beat Janet Hall on countback.

Canterbury Golf Club held a Ladies Weekend Medal which was won by Wendy Richards (h32) with net 70. Second was Jacqui Mount (h13) who pipped Gillian Bailey (h29) on countback. The Fun competitio­n took the format of a seven-club Stableford challenge and the sunny weather was welcomed by a full field of ladies. The winner was Kim Atkinson (h23) with 37 points, followed by Val Binns (h10) on 36. Third place went to Sarah Wetherell (h25) with 33.
