Barracks veteran honoured

Kentish Gazette Canterbury & District - - Historical Decision -

A veteran who served more than 20 years at Howe Barracks has received a memento of his service.

Blue Cooper, who served with 3rd Battalion Queen’s Regiment from 1966 - 1988, has been given the head of his regiment’s flagpole by Taylor Wimpey.

The flagpole was based outside his regimental headquarters at the barracks.

Mr Cooper said: “When I first walked through the gate with my teddy boy’s haircut in 1966, I saw the flagpole for the first time and it remained there throughout my time with the unit, which also became known as the Vipers club.

“It’s lovely to have it as a little memento for the Vipers - it’ll be on the top table at our next reunion.”

Blue Cooper, second right, receiving the head of the flagpole from Taylor Wimpey’s Joanna Webb and Phil Laycock and Viper club member Len Coombs
