Cup to league title success
Whitstable are the Canterbury Pharon Indoor League’ s under-13s team of the season.
Already winners of the league, they did the double on Saturday by beating Broadstairs then, in a keenly- fought cup final, Chestfield.
In the first semi-final, Broadstairs scored 100-5 but a valuable opening stand between Bart Johnson and Joe Clemence, who both retired on 26, paved the way for Whitstable’s six-wicket victory with an over to spare.
In the other semi- final, Canterbury were dismissed for 81 by Chestfield, who kept their nerve to win by one wicket in the last over.
Chestfield went on to bowl out Whitstable for a modest 71 but the undefeated league champions – who included two under-11s– retrieved the situation by their work in the field.
Although Chestfield made a promising start to their reply, Whitstable’s safe hands, direct throws at the stumps for run outs and the bowling of Johnson (3-19) put them on top.
And in the 11th over of the scheduled 12, there was joy unconfined from players and parents alike when Josh Sharp claimed Chestfield’s final wicket to complete a 17- run win.
