Police remove suspicious bag

-

Police were called to a suspicious bag left on top of a bin in sight of Canterbury Cathedral.

Officers attended Palace Street at just before 1pm on Tuesday and searched the Adidas sports bag to find it contained an old games console.

Security is high around major UK buildings in the wake of the terror attack at Westminster last month.

Richard Jones was one of those who watched events unfold.

The 46-year-old, who lives in London Road, said: “When I first saw it there was one of the council’s enforcement officers guarding it and warning people not to go near it.

“The police turned up pretty quickly, put some rubber gloves on and looked through the bag before taking it away.”

The bag had been left on a bin next to the old St Alphege Church.
