Green-fingered council tenants from across the district have thrown open their gardens for the Canterbury Tenant Consultative Group 2017 garden competition.

Winners gathered at Tower House in Westgate to collect their prizes.

The annual event was previously held by Canterbury City Council and then East Kent Housing for council tenants and leaseholders, but this year tenants took over the reins.

“It is the first year we’ve put it on ourselves after we were invited to get involved,” said Sheila King, one of the organisers.

“We arranged the sponsors and venue. It was a lovely day. The weather was good and we had about 35 entries. We also raised £350 for prizes. Winners got £50 and runners-up £30.”

The winner of best back garden was Hasan Taner, Ian Bingham won best container and Martin Ashdown best front garden.
