Numbers treble in just six months – and there’s room for more
The tournament marked a debut for FWF Herne Bay, who were formed just six months ago by Sam Petre and Fleur Drury.
Four players turned up to the first training session in a local park, but numbers have since trebled.
They drew their first two games 0-0, lost the third narrowly and were beaten by the eventual tournament winners in their fourth.
Sam said: “I am so proud of the team. We marked our opponents well and really kept the pressure on them in the first three games.
“We had several shots on goal, with one frustratingly hitting the crossbar. In the last game we were simply outclassed but we still gave it our all.
“We learned a lot and had such fun. We’ve got a friendly lined up soon and after today we can’t wait to play again.”
Team captain Eleanor Harding added: “We played so well as a team. It’s hard to believe this was our first ever match.
“Player of the tournament was Suzy Stockwin for her fine defending just 10 weeks after a c-section and breastfeeding between games.”
Fleur is encouraging anyone interested in getting involved with the side to email email@example.com or search Facebook for Females Who Football – Herne Bay.
Training is between 8pm and 9pm on Wednesdays.
Fleur said: “We really want more players to join us. Some of us are new to football and some of us have experience. It’s open to all ages and abilities. The main thing you need is enthusiasm. We’re friendly and welcoming. Why not come along and give it a try?”
