Pilgrims set standard high in league opener
The 40th Canterbury & District Netball League season opened on Sunday with 16 clubs competing across two divisions.
Division 1 rivals Pilgrims and Synergy produced a brilliant opening game.
The first quarter got off to a quick start with Pilgrims taking the advantage.
Not to be deterred, Synergy fought hard in the second quarter, making some great interceptions to pull back within four goals at half-time.
Both teams played steady in the third quarter but some fine play around the D saw Pilgrims edge ahead.
Synergy attacked hard in the last quarter and with some precision shooting netted 11 goals but it was Pilgrims who ran-out 44-40 winners to claim the five points, with Synergy settling for two points after their narrow defeat. Synergy GA player Kat Savage was named best attack.
Canterbury Academy Red’s first game in Division 1 was against Companion Care.
It was a slow start as both teams seemed to get back into the swing of things but the pace soon picked up with CC taking the lead.
They stretched their lead in the second quarter thanks to a versatile pairing between their GA and GS.
Academy were unlucky in the third quarter after multiple shots hit the rim, only to be picked up by CC defence and they were made to pay as CC won 38-15 with Red narrowly missing a point for the margin of defeat.
