Stevenson stars in first victory

Herne Bay HC

-

Herne Bay men’s 1sts won their first Kent Division 1 game of the season, defeating New Beccehamian 3-2. Bay took the lead with a drag flick from James Stevenson but the visitors pulled a goal back before half-time. The second half started well for Bay. They were awarded a penalty flick after a defender saved the ball with his leg on the line from a penalty corner. Stevenson put away the flick to make it 2-1. Bay then took advantage of some lapse defending and Sam Thompson played in Simon Newman-collins in for a third goal. New Beccs managed to pull a goal back at the end. Peter Nash was man of the match. In the reverse fixture, Paul Mcvey scored Bay 2nds’ goal in their 2-1 defeat at New Beccehamian in Kent Open Premier A. Bay failed to adapt to the slower pace of the home team and finally paid for it with New Beccs slotting the ball across to a forward, who slipped his marker and passed into the goal. The visitors responded well and were level less than a minute later. When Aaron White crashed the ball into the D, it deflected off a defender’s stick into the air and was picked up mid-air by Tom White who knocked it back above the keeper. Mcvey was on hand to make sure it went in by tapping it above the keeper’s head and into the goal. In the second half, Bay squandered several opportunities and were made to pay when New Beccs broke to score. Nick Barton took the manof-the-match honours. A second-half fightback earned the men’s 3rds a 4-2 home win against Ashford 6ths, with goals from Aaron Cathcart, James Nash, Sully Gould and Matt Young. Responding a 2-0 half-time deficit, Bay started the second half with more pace and were rewarded with a string of short corners and the goals started to flow. Top-of-the-table Bay men’s 4ths continued their unbeaten run with a 5-2 win against Old Bordenians. Peter Brundle’s opener was added to by a Matthew Bates penalty flick, following pressure from Alfie Forbes and Jim Wiggman. The Sittingbourne side pulled a goal back before half time. In the second half, Wiggman finished well and Matt Young took another opportunity soon after. Alfie Forbes capped a manof-the-match performance off with a goal towards the end. Clive Cripps’ goal proved in vain as Bay men’s 5ths were beaten 2-1 at K Sports 3rds. Bay ladies’ 1sts were beaten for the first time in Kent Division 1 – losing 1-0 to Sevenoaks Acorns who took over at the top of the table. Goalkeeper Jo Cox was player of the match.
