In 2017 it man­i­fested it­self in the form of the Snap Elec­tion, which I was an­noyed to dis­cover was noth­ing to do with the Europop group be­hind “Rhythm is a Dancer” but some­thing about strength­en­ing Theresa May’s hand and mak­ing the gov­ern­ment “strong and sta­ble”.

It didn’t quite work out that way. And nowhere was this bet­ter il­lus­trated than in Can­ter- bury, where Labour’s Rosie Duffield beat Sir Ju­lian Bra­zier, who had held the seat for the Tories since he took it from the Whigs in 1872.

It’s pretty as­ton­ish­ing see­ing as Labour seemed to have be­come some sort of protest move­ment,
