■ Pan­tera’s sec­ond ‘true’ al­bum was in many ways one that saved metal in its great­est time of need, when many fans felt bands like Me­tal­lica – who had just re­leased their slicker, self-ti­tled ‘Black’ al­bum – were start­ing to lose their edge. And though the Tex­ans were rooted in glam metal dur­ing their in­fancy, their eye­balld­is­solv­ing 1992 mas­ter­piece gave heavy mu­sic the kick up the arse it so des­per­ately needed. The fact we’ll never see their like again re­mains one of metal’s great­est curses.
