FRESH BLOOD’S NEWEST STARS MAKE RIOTOUS LIVE UK DEBUT AT EXPLOSIVE LONDON SHOW

■ SO, YOU read all about what a killer live band The Dirty Nil are in last week’s Fresh Blood (K!1605) – but can this chaotic Canadian rock’n’roll mob put the money where their mouths are on UK soil for the first time? In a word: yes. There’s a lot resting on tonight, given the fact that Luke Bentham, Dave Nardi and Kyle Fisher have not only not played the UK before, they’ve never played an overseas show anywhere. However, it takes no time for The Dirty Nil to push first-show nerves aside and make their mark. Up first, though, are London foursome Waco – who already look more than comfortable onstage. In-between talk of “bittersweet” British beaches and the only desert in the UK (which is called Dungeness, FYI – thanks for the geography lesson, lads), the openers blast their way through the likes of Agitation with total confidence. It’s the perfect vibe for The Dirty Nil to follow. The trio set the tone with the opening two-punch of No Weaknesses and Zombie Eyed, making no fuss over the gravity of the occasion. While the crowd take a while to warm up, the songs from forthcoming debut Higher Power make an instant impact, sounding slick and confident among the chaos. It’s just under an hour of loud, noisy fun – and a hugely exciting glimpse at The Dirty Nil’s bright future.
