EVA PLAYS DEAD
FOR FANS OF: MARMOZETS, HALESTORM, THE PRETTY RECKLESS
WHO ARE THIS LOT SKATING INTO OUR LIVES?
That’s Eva Plays Dead! And while that ice might look sturdy, once this quartet fire out their no-bullshit brand of rock, everything – including the ice – will shatter before them. Hell, they’re kicking up such a storm that their fans are even changing their names.“one guy has changed his name by default to Eva, which is proper mental,” laughs frontwoman Tiggy Dee. But while 2015’s Sounds Ofthewrittenword EP started to attract international attention and scoop them support slots with the likes of Newyears Day, things took a sour twist this year in a way that would truly test their spirits…
HOW DID IT TURN SOUR?
“KIRK HAMMETT SENT US A PEDAL!”
Earlier in 2016, the band had over £3,000 worth of their gear stolen from their van, including guitars, pedals and bass heads.“it was rubbish for us for a while because we had to stop practicing, and we couldn’t play shows because we didn’t have the gear which was upsetting,” remembers Tiggy.this occurrence is all too familiar with British bands at the moment, with the likes of ROAM andyoung Guns also suffering similar fates in 2016. So much so, in fact, it put a halt to their musical endeavours.“it was a massive hindrance – we had to push all the new music back to focus on recovering everything,” says guitarist Matt Gascoyne.at least there was a light at the end of the tunnel:“one of our fans created their own Justgiving page and started fundraising themselves. Dr. Martens even got on board and donated £2,000 towards it!” beams Tiggy. But for Matt, things became even more surreal. “We got a Twitter message from this company called KHDK, and I thought it was some DIY, dude-in-the-back-of-his-mum’s-shed-buildingpedals, offering me a free pedal.” Little did Matt know this was, in fact, Kirk Hammett from Metallica’s pedal company.“kirk heard of the story and they sent me over a distortion pedal,” Matt beams.“i’m basically best mates with Kirk Hammett now.”
SO, THINGS ARE LOOKING UP?
Now, with their equipment back and their spirits high, Eva Plays Dead have been given an extra lease of life to prove that they’re one of the most exciting rock bands in the UK. Latest single Bones is a straight-up anthem in the waiting.talking about their fiery new song, tiggy says:“it’s alright that people make mistakes – we’re all dickheads, we all do stupid things – but it doesn’t mean we’re horrible people.you’ve just made a mistake, you can learn from it. It’s just about that aspect of life.” For a band supposedly playing dead, they’re doing a great job of making rock both sound and feel alive.
