EVEN IN A DIFFICULT YEAR, ROCK’S LAST HERO HAS STOOD UP AND MADE 2016 HIS OWN… WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR 2016 HIGHLIGHTS? “Well, I got the chance to do an acoustic performance in Paris, at the Hard Rock Cafe, just me and an acoustic guitar.about 50 fans came, and it was just a special experience. It really got me thinking about doing more strictly acoustic shows.also, the surprise of how well [Alter Bridge’s The Last Hero album] did in the first week, which was the best figures we’ve ever had.that the fans appreciate the record is really good to know.”
2016 SEEMED LIKE THE FIRST YEAR IN A WHILE WHERE YOU HAVEN’T SPENT 340 NIGHTS ON THE ROAD…
“Correct! It was really great to wake up in my own bed, and to feed the dogs and let them out and do all those normal things. But at the same time, after a couple of weeks I start Jonesing to get back on the bus or back on a plane. It’s definitely in my DNA at this point to see the road come up at me. It was great, and it helped me reset things mentally, but it also reminded me that I love what I do for a living.”
THE GENERAL CONSENSUS IS THAT 2016 HAS NOT BEEN A CLASSIC YEAR…
“From a lot of standpoints it hasn’t been the greatest year. For me, the tone of the year was set when David Bowie died, and from that point on it hasn’t gotten any better. It’s been a tough one. 2016 was also the year my mother-in-law died, which of course affected my wife, myself and my family, so that wasn’t easy.” ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO KERRISTMAS? “Well, thanksgiving is really the holiday that I enjoy the most. I’m always up for Thanksgiving.that’s one thing I always miss when I’m on the road, being home for the big turkey dinner. But Christmas is cool. It’s fun to see my little nephews get their presents, and to see them all gakked up on sugar. So that’s entertaining.the thing that I don’t like so much is how commercial it is and how much pressure everyone’s under to buy the right presents.that part of it has become a little frustrating. I think we’ve all been hoodwinked to an extent there. Christmas should be about being with loved ones.”
WOULD YOU WALK US THROUGH KERRISTMAS DAY IN THE KENNEDY HOUSEHOLD, PLEASE?
“We’ll get up and let out Siggy, our eldest dog, who we named after Sigmund Freud; he’s a Shih Tzu.and now we also have another Shih Tzu, who we’ve called Mozart, so he’ll go out, too.after that, and I know this sounds pathetic, but the dogs will get their Christmas treats, which of course they love.then we’ll give our presents to one another.after that, the mayhem ensues. We tend to flip-flop between my wife’s family and my family, so either we’ll go to my parents first and then to her folks for the evening, or maybe we’ll do it the other way around. It is a lot of fun, but by the end of the day we both feel like we’ve done a full day’s work!”
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE FOR KERRISTMAS?
“I’d like to get the perfect neck pillow for flying, for when I’m stuck on a 30-hour flight. I haven’t found that yet, so maybe someone can get me the mac daddy of flying pillows that will make all the hours I spend aboard a steel tube just that bit easier.”
WHAT HAS 2016 TAUGHT YOU?
“It has taught me that the world is still a wacky place.and it’s taught me that there’s no absolutes, that is for certain.”
