THE KING'S SPEECH
IT WOULDN’T BE KERRISTMAS WITHOUT A FEW WORDS FROM A ROYAL. SO, ALL RISE FOR LARS ULRICH – METALLICA DRUMMER AND WOULD-BE KING OF DENMARK!
“I HAVE A DANISH CHRISTMAS WITH A F**K-OFF TREE” LARS ULRICH
DEAR KERRANG! READERS,
“This year, as every year, has been crazy-busy for Metallica.the craziest thing for me, the real mindfuck of it all, is that even after 35 years we seem to be busier than ever! But one of the shifts we’ve experienced in the band – a real shift, like when the [tectonic] plates shift – is that we now fit Metallica around our family situations, rather than fit our family around the band.
“We all have very similar family structures to each other in Metallica, but Christmas in the Ulrich household is a Danish Christmas.that means we celebrate Christmas on the evening of the 24th.we have a big, fuck-off tree, which gets bigger every year – it’s kinda crazy! Every year we sit there and say, ‘We should get a smaller one…’ and then they always end up getting bigger, for some reason.
“My dad lives very close to us in San Francisco with his wife, so they come and get involved, as well. I’ve brought my kids up the Danish way.they get to celebrate American Christmas with their mom, but with me it’s Danish Christmas, so they get the best of both worlds!
“To eat, it’s either duck or goose, and all kinds of potatoes and greens.then we have a Danish rice pudding, and in that rice pudding are chopped-up almonds.you put a full almond in there, too – that’s a big tradition from when I was a kid.whoever gets the portion with the whole almond in it gets the Almond Gift, which now is, like, a $10 itunes gift card or whatever.then we open presents, and the tradition is that you do it as a big, communal thing. I give someone a present, and we’ll all sit around watching them open it, then we talk about the present, then that person goes and gets a present and gives it to someone else, and we watch them unwrap that… It takes something like three fucking days to open all these fucking presents, ’cause it’s a communal sharing thing! That’s the thing in Denmark – Christmas is a thing we all do together, all of us equal.
“This year has been crazy, and 2017 will be, too! There’s a huge amount of stuff that goes into the Metallica ‘pot’ now – new music, touring, festivals, reissues, our own label… We’ve got some really cool things that I’m really excited for in 2017, and I hope to see you all then!”
