ALEX LUCIANO,

DIET CIG “i was 12 years old and avril Lavigne was my first real concert experience. i was up on the balcony, headbanging, and thinking it was so cool that she was rocking a tie onstage. “i have a hazy memory of the show, but i think she was totally shredding on guitar, though that could possibly have just been someone from her band. i remember thinking that i wanted to be like her and skateboard and be a badass. at that age, i didn’t see a whole lot of women doing what she was doing, so she showed my 12-year-old self that you could be punk as fuck and a girl and do everything that the boys are doing. “i still like a couple of her old jams, but i’m not a fan of her new music at all. i think, for sure, that she’s a gateway artist for other bands. i later saw [singersongwriter] Frankie cosmos, which was my first DIY show. There were about 25 people in the room, and i was like,‘oh my god, i could do that.’ i later realised that the studio that we recorded our ep and full-length record in was the same house in which i’d seen that show in!”
