New Rose was the first punk single to be released by a British band.this buzzsaw classic was made available a whole month before Johnny Rotten declared himself to be the antichrist and an anarchist on the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy In The UK.AND to put it into context, the pop charts at the time were politely populated by the likes of ABBA and Chicago;

nothing sounded like The Damned. With sneering lyrics that declared,

‘I’ve gotta feelin’ inside of me/it’s

kinda strange like a stormy sea’, many thought the song was about the start of a brand new relationship. But in fact, its author guitarist Brian James was single and was writing about being part of an exciting new music scene.and, over four decades later, that opening drum pattern and riff still provides a visceral thrill.
