HE’S POP-PUNK’S HOTTEST PROPERTY. BUT WILL COLE SINK OR SWIM WHEN IT COMES TO BEING A ROCKSTAR?

Kerrang! (UK) - - Gigs -

ON ROCK’N’ROLL… HAVE YOU EVER SPENT A NIGHT IN A JAIL CELL?

“No, but I’m trying to become comfortable with the idea.as an activist in the Trump era, there will be a lot of times when I’ll be protesting, he’ll call in the National Guard and people will be getting arrested. I’d like to be ready for that, but I don’t know if I’d survive in prison, if I’m honest.”

WHAT’S THE STRANGEST PLACE YOU’VE EVER WOKEN UP?

“I’m not sure if it’s strange, as such, but I remember the worst wake-up I had was en route to play Bestival.we played the day after we played a show in Paris, so we drove to… somewhere… I think it was Portsmouth, to catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight. I got woken up at some horrible time in the morning, and was just miserable. I didn’t want to hang at all.”

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN KICKED OUT OF A HOTEL?

“No, but we’ve walked out and tried to get our money back. In St. Petersburg, Florida there were empty Mcdonald’s bags and a used condom in a room, which had been cleaned that day, so someone had broken in to use it since.that was freaky, and made me think of The Shining, walking in on that old, mouldy lady in the bath…” And she was eating Mcdonald’s and chucking the wrapper on the floor?

FAILURES AND F’UPS… HAVE YOU EVER FORGOTTEN THE WORDS TO ONE OF YOUR

OWN SONGS?

“Oh yeah, plenty of times – definitely more than once! I have a brain that moves really quickly, and something in the crowd might trigger a thought and I’ll start analysing it… and all of a sudden I’ll be going, ‘What the fuck!? I totally can’t remember the next line!’ If I can remember one word I can usually get it back, though.”

HAVE YOU EVER FALLEN OFF A STAGE?

“Yeah, a lot of times. One time in New York City I was hanging upside-down from a lighting rig. I felt like people were holding on to me, and that made me think I could let go with my legs. It turned out these people were barely touching me, and I landed with the stage monitor in the middle of my back!” Was the monitor okay?!

LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS… WHAT’S THE BEST FREEBIE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

“Guitars are nice – really nice – but the best thing is probably a T-shirt I got from Youtube. We played at their office, and in exchange we got some knowledge on how to use it, and they also gave us this swag bag of socks, shirts, sweat bands and guitar picks.and they have a slide in their office, which we got to ride!”

WHO’S THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON IN YOUR PHONE?

“I guess it’d have to be our drummer Joey’s dad [Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong]. I text him all the time, but that’s because he’s my best friend’s dad and he helped raise me, so I don’t think of him as famous. However, I do get really starstruck every time I text with Tim Armstrong of Rancid!” Alright, alright, you win…

ON THE HYPOTHETICAL… HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF A BROADWAY PRODUCER WANTED TO TURN DON’T BE A DICK INTO A ‘PUNK-POPERA’?

“I’d probably tell them to fuck off! It would be an interesting process, though, and I think if we only ever had one chance to do that I wouldn’t want it to be that particular album, because I think we could do a lot better, and I’d rather do something more collaborative.”

YOUR INSTAGRAM MAKES IT CLEAR YOU LOVE DOGS – COULD YOU SHOOT A WEREDOG WITH A SILVER

BULLET IF YOU HAD TO?

“Probably not – though it might depend on the breed of dog. If it was a Lab, Corgi or French Bulldog, no way. I’ve always really identified with dogs, so if it bit me and turned me into a weredog it wouldn’t be the end of the world!” It might…

SPIRITUAL HEADMELTER… IS GOD DEAD, OR MERELY RESTING?

“To me, God is very much alive – I don’t see God in a Judeo-christian sense, or as a provable thing, but believing in that helps me deal with the concept of a universe that’s so huge and expanding and scary. I think God is alive in a lot of scary ways, too, with so many people’s versions of him making a lot of problems in the world.” So… is he or isn’t he?
