CAMBRIDGE ROCKERS HINT AT REINVENTION IN LONDON

Kerrang! (UK) - - Contents - WORDS: TOM SHEPHERD PHOTOS: IAN COLLINS

■ MALLORY KNOX aren’t known for their politics. So when, ahead of new song Saviour, the band’s frontman Mikey Chapman starts an impassioned speech that pulls on threads of fascism and a toothless government, it gathers a quiet attention. It’s unexpected. But any concerns that the singer might not have the chutzpah for such a monologue are quickly settled.the words come with clarity and intent, Mikey rounding off with a warning that, “our generation is going to have to pick up the pieces.” Tonight’s show comes not even a month after the release of Wired, a record that sees the Cambridge group try to break away from their squeaky-clean image and take more risks. It’s clearly a mantra they’ve taken beyond the music.

Opening the show tonight are Scottish trio Fatherson. their soothing, folkish melodic rock flickers between light and darker shades, and feels like the room taking a big bubble-bath together. Meanwhile, Cambridge broodsters Lonely The Brave’s set hinges on the dense, overcast tones of last year’s Thing Will Matter, which, folded in with David Jakes’ moonlight vocals, is enough to cause a lump-in-throat epidemic in the crowd.

Mallory Knox aren’t known for their swagger. But that might have to change.the newfound bravado of Wired is felt immediately in playful opener Giving It Up, as Mikey reaches for falsetto vocal peaks as easily as the rest of us might reach for a Kitkat.the fluorescence of the new record arrives again in California and Wired – and its emotional rawness surfaces on Falling In Love.

Sadly, that boldness doesn’t translate back to older tracks, where – although every technical mark is hit – the songs arrive safely comfortzoned with smoothed edges, and any exposed wires are neatly tucked away. It’s a shame – there are real glimmers tonight that Mallory Knox are on the verge of committing to a vivid reinvention. they just need to ruffle a few more feathers, not least their own.

Lonely The Brave didn’t bother ironing for the occasion Mikey’s new profile pic was going to be SASSY Anyone know what time MK Dons are on?
