I’M HALF-ITALIAN, BUT…

“I grew up in England, and though I ultimately feel more English I’d like to feel more Italian. My dad’s from Italy, and he was around a lot when we were kids, but then my parents split up. It was only a couple of years ago I got back in touch with him, and that’s been amazing for me. I was very close with my mum growing up, and I still am.”

ONE THING I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT ON TOUR IS…

“A guitar, and not just so I can play the shows. Playing it keeps me sane, and really that’s what matters most when I’m going to be away for a while. I don’t take my own sheets or anything either, and bunks actually make me very claustrophobic, so I’ll normally sleep in the lounge or on the floor!”

ONE OF THE BEST Things ABOUT MY GIRLFRIEND IS…

“She brings me back down to Earth. She’s a very strong person, and very realistic and grown up – and I’m not! But, at the same time, she’s really fun and I feel like she always brings out the best in me. We’ve been together just over three years, and obviously I miss her a lot while we’re out on tour. I think that’s the case for everyone who has a relationship like that – I just show it a little more.”

THE MOST AMAZING PLACE I’ve EVER VISITED IS…

“Colombia. It developed a really bad rep in the ’90s, and people still tend to automatically apply that any time you mention it, but it’s the most beautiful country I’ve ever seen in my life. My girlfriend is Colombian, which is why I went, and it’s got so much soul, the people are so friendly and warm, and the culture is so different to anything you’ll experience over here.”

MOST OF THE TIME, I REALLY ENJOY…

“Drinking. I think I’m lucky in that I know it’s bad for me, but being drunk doesn’t turn me into some selfdestructive person. I might get a bit more loud and do stupid things I regret, but only because I feel like a twat, not because I’ve done something horrible. I think all of us in the band have stayed on that 15-year-old, getting-drunk-is-ace level, and that’s fine by us!” THE BOOK THAT HAD The MOST PROFOUND AFFECT ON ME IS… “Women, by Charles Bukowski. I was of the mind that he was one of those writers that hipsters talk about because it’s cool to do so. But his books are amazing, and when I first read Women I had started writing my own lyrics, and I really identified with where he was coming from. Obviously I don’t write as vulgarly as he does, but the way he writes so plainly and with this great no-bullshit attitude really connects with me.”

BEFORE I DIE I WANT TO…

“Become fluent in more languages – and meet Ricky Gervais! He’s the funniest human being on Earth, and I’d actually freak out if I met him, because I steal a lot of his personality. Not intentionally, but watching too much of The Office! I’m not that rockstar-y when it comes to life goals. I never started down this path to headline arenas, though it would be amazing to headline Reading & Leeds one day.”

MY FAVOURITE NONMUSICAL ACTIVITY IS…

“Cooking. If I had to pick between music and cooking I really wouldn’t know which one to choose! The only thing that can really get me out of a mood is cooking, and obviously I love eating, too – which explains why I’ve gained weight! Sometimes I’ll base my whole day around cooking. I love it when I can spend hours preparing and making food, and be spontaneous, tasting and improvising as I go.” THE MAIN REASON I POST SO MANY PICTURES On INSTAGRAM IS… “To amuse myself and to mess with close friends! My brother and I went to San Francisco a few years ago, and our drummer Tom [Ogden] gets really jealous if we do anything without him – so I initially made that Instagram page just to antagonise him! At this point the more friends I annoy the better!”

“I’LL NORMALLY SLEEP ON THE FLOOR ON tour!” James
