my First GIG

WHO: NIRVANA, MUDHONEY AND ARAGON BALLROOM, JAWBREAKER, CHICAGO,1993 NIRVANA, MUDHONEY JAWBREAKER? AND NOPE, JUST is THIS A DREAM LINE-UP? THE RISE AGAINST FRONTMAN’S FIRST SHOW…

Kerrang! (UK) - - GIGS - RISE AGAINST TIM MCILRATH,

“I was 15 years old. My parents just trusted what was going on, and let us go into the city. Nirvana played two nights at the Aragon Ballroom, which is an amazing venue that Rise Against would subsequently play, but at the time I felt like I was in over my head – quite literally as everyone was taller than me.

“Before the show the crowd was this loose mingling of people, but then as the bands started it just compressed, and in that moment I realised, ‘Wow, I’m really here.’

“This show was my introduction to Jawbreaker. I was like, ‘Holy shit, this is an amazing band!’ I always think about that when we have bands opening up for Rise Against: for many nights on tour you’re playing to people that are seeing their first ever show, and people always remember the opening band at their first-ever show.

“Nirvana were everything I wanted them to be. They were on the In Utero tour, so had the huge angel things from the Heart-shaped Box video onstage. Kurt Cobain was out of his mind but he sounded so good. I’d read later that he had his wife [Courtney Love] and kid [Frances Bean Cobain] backstage, which is something I think about when I’ve been in that same venue with my family – it puts it into perspective.”
