16 AMITY TAKE A BOW
HOW’S AMITY AFFLICTION’S NEW MUSIC COMING ALONG?
JOEL BIRCH (VOCALS):“IT’S definitely – and I would say finally – taking a pretty big step away from what we’ve been doing for our first albums. I know that a lot of people said that [fifth album] This Could Be Heartbreak was very formulaic and typical of us, and while we’re careful not to take things too personally, there was some truth to it.we still feel it was a much more refined version of what we were doing, and I’m personally still really happy with that album.this new change is something we’re all really stoked on, which has never really happened before, us being on the same page.”
YOU DID A COVER OF THE WEEKND’S CAN’T FEEL MY FACE FOR THE PUNK GOES POP COMPILATION. WHAT HAVE REACTIONS BEEN LIKE?
“I haven’t read them. It’s a cover, and I don’t give a fuck about covers, so I don’t give a shit about people not liking it!”
TELL US ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ZOMBIE-THEMED VIDEO…
“It was filmed at an abandoned mental asylum invictoria [Australia].we were trying to figure out what to do with the video, because we didn’t want to do a typical pop thing, or make it a superfunny piss take one, and we couldn’t make it about the actual content of the song – because it’s about cocaine. I really like this movie called Warm Bodies [2013 zombie rom-com], so thought it would be cool to make it a zombie love story where you get to the end and they can’t even do anything, they’re just stood there staring at each other.”
WILL THE SONG BE MAKING AN APPEARANCE AT READING & LEEDS?
“Never! That’s something that the band agree on, and if they did want to do it then I wouldn’t be performing – let’s put it that way (laughs)!”
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PROSPECT OF PLAYING?
“It’s bucket list stuff: pretty daunting but amazing. It’s so iconic.any band who’s anyone has played that festival, so to even be asked is crazy and amazing.”
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT VISITING THE UK?
“I don’t feel as homesick when I’m there. Obviously being a colony of Great Britain there’s going to be some cultural overlap. I feel there’s a general attitude that’s shared between the UK and Australia in terms of not being afraid to take the piss out of ourselves.the weather is so shit there, though, but you can’t change that!”
ANYTHING ELSE YOU’RE NOT KEEN ON?
“The food is expensive. Everything is expensive! I’m hoping that Brexit smashes the value of the pound… Well it has, but I hope it continues to do so. Sorry!” THE PIT / THE LOCK up; R: FRIDAY, 9:15pm; L: SATURDAY, 9pm
