On the night of September 26, 1986, Metallica were travelling through Sweden while on tour for Master Of Puppets, when their bus skidded off the road. Cliff Burton, asleep in one of the bunks, was thrown from a window and killed as the bus fell. He was just 24. Devastated at the loss of their friend, Metallica bravely chose to continue, and a mere six weeks later they drafted in Jason Newsted to be their new bassist. A new album featuring the new kid emerged: …And Justice For All. The album’s ultra-fiddly opening track, which he co-wrote, showed his importance to ’Tallica’s future, too.
