Clock­ing in at a huge nine min­utes, the ti­tle-track to Me­tal­lica’s fourth al­bum was the most dif­fi­cult song on an al­bum full of dif­fi­cult songs. “We wanted to write shorter ma­te­rial, but it never hap­pened,” said James Het­field some years later. Deal­ing with themes of cor­rup­tion (and per­haps with a nod to an Al Pa­cino court­room drama film of the same name) the struc­ture to the song had to be plot­ted on a chart be­fore they recorded it.
