An expansive mix of alt.rock and ambition, with their eyes set on Download and beyond…

As kids, the members of Essex alt.rock quartet Sun Arcana dreamed of being in a touring band. Whether they were headlining arenas or opening club shows didn’t matter – the goal was to lead a life on the road, playing the songs they’d written to people willing

to hear them. Two years after forming, the band – comprising vocalist/guitarist Tom Harper Ward, guitarist Harry Acreman, bassist Jules Wildblood and drummer Ryan Daniels – have not only toured with Brit heavyweights Skindred, but they’ve also been announced for this year’s Download Festival. Those dreams, it would seem, are coming true.

“It’s crazy to be playing Download!” Tom tells K!. “To have it as our first major festival is incredible – we’re buzzing! I’m really excited about sharing a stage with Gold Key. I saw them live recently, and they’ve got such a huge sound. When I was younger I loved Avenged Sevenfold, so the fact that they’re headlining is incredible. You Me At Six are another awesome band on the line-up, too. It’s going to be epic!”

Before they tread the hallowed boards of Donington, however, comes the most important event in Sun Arcana’s career to date – that being the March 9 release of As I Take A Breath…, their debut EP. It’s a hugely significant moment for the quartet, something Tom is well aware of.

“It feels mad,” he says. “We only have a small fanbase at the moment, but it’s scary to wonder what they’ll think of the new material. We really want them to enjoy what we’re doing. All the tracks we’ve released so far have been varied, and that’s something we want to stick with – we don’t want our music to sound the same.”

That’s hardly surprising, really, given who their heroes are.

“We take influence from expansive rock bands like Muse and Radiohead,” explains Tom. “We create big, atmospheric songs, but most importantly, we really love a good riff!”

With a big sound comes big potential, and while Tom and his bandmates’ ambitions may have started out modestly, the buzz that’s now building around them suggests a group capable of achieving great things. For Sun Arcana, this could be the dawn of something big. SUN ARCANA’S EP AS I TAKE A BREATH… IS OUT ON MARCH 9 VIA EASY LIFE
