The best of AVENGED’S massive production… PYRO

Having relieved firemen of their duties and ditched the hot stuff completely on their most recent UK tour, there we were thinking that A7X were bored of pyro. Little did we know they were actually just saving up a couple of years’ worth of supply to unleash it all in one go. The best use of it in the set? The hotter-than-the-sun Shepherd Of Fire.

Watching mega-shredders Zacky Vengeance and Syn Gates standing back-to-back and soloing is never not the coolest sight ever. But seeing them upclose-and-personal at the end of the walkway is even more of a thrill. The band made perfect use of the glory ramp – the subtle, unsung hero of their production – this year.

We already got a preview of this dude in arenas last year. But few could anticipate just how badass he would look floating high above drummer Brooks Wackerman while the six-and-a-half-minute Higher plays out into the Donington sky. As Shadows croons, ‘Meet me

in the stars tonight,’ you can’t help but imagine floating up into space and coming face-toface with Avenged’s enormous zombie astronaut.

All the best bands have awesome – if ever-so-slightly cheesy – mascots. See: Iron Maiden, Megadeth et al. And while Avenged’s Deathbat logo provides enough striking, iconic imagery as it is, their new skeleton ‘King’ that emerges during Hail To The King (see what they did there?) is not only a brilliant surprise, but also a creepy proposition as he towers threateningly behind Brooks Wackerman.
