THE DANGEROUS DOGS ACT IS UNJUST

With ‘dangerous dogs’ frequently getting a bad rap, TRASH BOAT leader (and canine lover) TOBI DUNCAN says we should blame unsafe owners…

Kerrang! (UK) - - Talking Loud -

“Ithink there is no such thing as a dangerous breed of dog. I’ve met pit bulls that have been absolute sweethearts and it’s because they have been raised and trained well. Obviously there are dogs that have tendencies towards aggression because they’re stronger breeds, but putting in legislation to force them to wear muzzles, before they put in legislation that requires people to have training in order to own certain breeds is crazy. Perhaps that wouldn’t be too pragmatic, but that seems better than literally making the breed illegal.

“Breed-specific laws are strange. All fucking dogs are bred to be dangerous. That’s why we domesticated them, so they could look after us and be aggressive on our behalf. If someone has got a dangerous breed or a non-dangerous breed, if they’ve raised it badly and the dog then behaves badly, it doesn’t matter the breed or the law. It just seems ridiculous to me. They’ve had a similar legislation in Canada recently as well, despite there being zero evidence to prove that dog attacks on humans are reduced by this ban. What is proven is that dogs are needlessly put down, harnessed and muzzled. Owners live in fear of [dog] seizure, euthanisation and then animosity among neighbours. It creates misunderstanding and ignorance and it’s not the dog’s fault.

“Dogs are incredible. They have been integral to our survival since caveman times. We have service dogs for the blind and disabled, and what a gift that is. That dog is giving its whole life for a person and does it with a wag and a smile. I think people should recognise their capacity for benevolence and their potential for purity as creatures.

“In terms of not contributing to the greater problem, be a responsible owner. Watch a bunch of [the Dog Whisperer] Cesar Millan! Go to some puppy training courses! Don’t just own a dog, be the absolute whisperer because that’s the only way dangerous breeds look good. We domesticated them, so it is our responsibility that they are not aggressive. That is our job.”
