FOR FANS OF: Electric Wizard, Slabdragger, Conan Kudos to Kurokuma. Before they’ve even struck a note here, the Sheffield psych-sludge trio have already put both their left-field originality and stoner rock credentials beyond doubt. A concept-record based on Paul Kirchner’s ‘70s Dope Rider comic strip from infamous marijuana bible High Times, it takes the term ‘high art’ to a whole new level. Divided simply into Part One and Part Two, the music can be straightforwardly summed up as a five-minute psychedelic buildup, followed by eight more of riff-tastic payoff. Building on the foundations laid by 2016 debut Advorsus, and structured around drummer Joe E. Allen’s irresistibly tribal rhythms, here Kurokuma build a cathedral of tangled, tortured sound that nods to everyone from underground favourites Slabdragger to doom overlords Electric Wizard and Conan. Casual listeners, obviously, need not apply. But red-eyed purists should definitely take a big hit. SAM LAW
