FOR FANS OF: Slayer, Power Trip, Hatebreed

■ One could argue that there are no truly great Soulfly albums. While Max Cavalera’s tribe have plenty of songs that explode with superb metallic rage, album-wise, each has featured an unfortunate filler/killer ratio, usually built on the same recycled grooves. With Cavalera Conspiracy’s 2017 Psychosis perhaps the finest thing Max has put his name to for at least a decade, the chances of Ritual being bogged down with cast-offs seemed high, but whatever lit a fire under the man’s arse is evidently still scorching skin, for the ’Fly’s 11th album is a pleasingly aggressive, frequently thrash-happy affair that has plenty of life to it. Ignore the tedious titletrack and obligatory noodling closer, and instead embrace hate-fuelled monsters like Dead Behind The Eyes and The Summoning, because once the acoustic intro of Demonized is out of the way and Zyon Cavalera opens up behind the kit, it’s metal mania nearly all the way.
