FOR FANS OF: Type O Negative, Alice In Chains, Cult Of Luna

■ With a title translating as ‘Sad Suburb’ and its melancholy lit by flickering streetlights, this fifth LP from French doomsters Hangman’s Chair casts its gaze on the streets of their Paris hometown to astonishing effect. From the dread of Naïve, to the nightmare gloominess of Sleep Juice, there are touches of influence from heavyweight contemporaries like Pallbearer and YOB mingling with the urban-gothic of legends like Type O Negative. Touch The Razor and Sidi Bel Abbes, meanwhile, see blackgaze and postrock influences from the likes of Deafheaven and Alcest allowed to bleed through, and by the time synth-touched instrumental Tara pulses into life there are even discernible shades of Nine Inch Nails at play. Crucially, however, the quartet indulge themselves: exploring all the fear, tension and latent dread that poison the romance of The City Of Lights with thrilling, open-wound honesty. Bleak, but fantastic. SAM LAW
