EVANESCENCE

SYNTHESIS LIVE (EAGLE VISION)

Kerrang! (UK) - - Reviews - SAM LAW

FOR FANS OF: Nightwish, Metallica, Lacuna Coil

Passion projects really can be double-edged swords. On the one hand, fans get the undiluted artistic vision: a look into the performer’s creative soul. On the other, they can find themselves on years-long detours through leftfield territory few cared to visit. “It’s a lifelong childhood dream come true to play in the orchestra like this,” announces Amy Lee, 20 minutes into this crystalline document of Evanescence’s sold-out Synthesis show at the Grand Theater at Foxwoods, CT last November. Where the titular studio album felt, to some, like a baffling electro-orchestral retread of the Arkansas giants’ greatest hits, the opportunity to see Amy’s throbbing passion here – and the sheer number of moving parts in motion required to bring these compositions to life – adds a crucial extra dimension to this CD/DVD set. It might not quite match the goosebump-raising experience of having caught these versions of Lacrymosa, Lithium and My Immortal performed in the flesh in all their euphoric glory, but there are still cellofuls of neoclassical thrills here.
