Using 4mm needles and yarn MC cast on 42 ( 46: 50) sts. Row 1 (RS): K2 (p2, k2) to end of row. Row 2 (WS): P2 (k2, p2) to end of row. Repeat the last 2 rows 7 more times. Mark each end of row by tying in a scrap of yarn.
Change to 3.25mm needles. Repeat the last 2 rows 7 more times.
Change to 4mm needles. Begin stripe sequence and follow 113 row stripe sequence throughout the rest of the pattern unless instructed otherwise. Row 31 (RS): Knit. Row 32 (WS): Purl. The last two rows make up stocking stitch. Continue in stocking stitch and stripe sequence until you have completed stripe sequence, ending with a RS row. Striped section should measure approx 43cm (17in) long.
Change to 3.25mm needles. Next row (WS): P2 (k2, p2) to end row. Next row (RS): K2 (p2, k2) to end of row. Repeat the last 2 rows 6 more times. Mark each end of row by tying in a scrap of yarn.
Change to 4mm needles. Repeat the last 2 rows 8 more times. Cast off in rib on WS. MAKING UP 1 Weave in all ends. 2 Fold the hat in half with RS together. 3 Using yarn MC, tapestry needle and backstitch, join sides from markers only. 4 Turn hat right side out. 5 With WS together and using MC, tapestry needle and backstitch, join remaining sides of ribbed brim. 6 Weave in any remaining yarn tails, and fold back the brim. 7 Make two large pom poms and stitch to top corners of hat. We used Mondial Express in 889 Gold, but any yarn remaining from making your stripy would work great too!

Knit 20 rows. Change to Gold. Knit 20 rows. Change to Light Knit 20 rows. Cast off knitwise.
