Us­ing 4mm nee­dles and yarn MC cast on 42 ( 46: 50) sts. Row 1 (RS): K2 (p2, k2) to end of row. Row 2 (WS): P2 (k2, p2) to end of row. Re­peat the last 2 rows 7 more times. Mark each end of row by ty­ing in a scrap of yarn.

Change to 3.25mm nee­dles. Re­peat the last 2 rows 7 more times.

Change to 4mm nee­dles. Be­gin stripe se­quence and fol­low 113 row stripe se­quence through­out the rest of the pat­tern un­less in­structed oth­er­wise. Row 31 (RS): Knit. Row 32 (WS): Purl. The last two rows make up stock­ing stitch. Con­tinue in stock­ing stitch and stripe se­quence un­til you have com­pleted stripe se­quence, end­ing with a RS row. Striped sec­tion should mea­sure ap­prox 43cm (17in) long.

Change to 3.25mm nee­dles. Next row (WS): P2 (k2, p2) to end row. Next row (RS): K2 (p2, k2) to end of row. Re­peat the last 2 rows 6 more times. Mark each end of row by ty­ing in a scrap of yarn.

Change to 4mm nee­dles. Re­peat the last 2 rows 8 more times. Cast off in rib on WS. MAK­ING UP 1 Weave in all ends. 2 Fold the hat in half with RS to­gether. 3 Us­ing yarn MC, tapestry nee­dle and back­stitch, join sides from mark­ers only. 4 Turn hat right side out. 5 With WS to­gether and us­ing MC, tapestry nee­dle and back­stitch, join re­main­ing sides of ribbed brim. 6 Weave in any re­main­ing yarn tails, and fold back the brim. 7 Make two large pom poms and stitch to top cor­ners of hat. We used Mon­dial Ex­press in 889 Gold, but any yarn re­main­ing from mak­ing your stripy would work great too!
