THE FIVE-CYLINDER Td5 was the last Land Rover-derived diesel engine and it has proved pretty bulletproof over the years. Now in great demand as prices for all Defenders steadily rise. There are a good number of special editions to choose from and, if you are looking for a utility vehicle, a healthy amount of truck cabs and hard-tops are always on sale. Reliable, but check service history. BUYER’S TIP: Check for rear crossmember rust.
