TO DATE there has been no problems with this Discovery 2’s coolant system: no tell-tale pink staining around the pump which would indicate coolant leakage (Td5 engines use orange-pink OAT antifreeze). There have not been any cooling problems either, with the temperature gauge thankfully standing dead centre at all times. However, with the engine sitting in a rolling chassis, with no bodywork in the way, access is excellent – there is no better opportunity to carry out some renewal and upgrades.
The water pump is driven off the back of the power steering pump by a keyed wheel arrangement. This interface between the water pump and power steering pump will wear over time – a notch will form in the drive on the water pump, which can eventually result in outright failure. Other ways in which an old water pump can fail include the seal between the water pump and the cover leaking, the seal between the water pump and the drive housing failing and the bearing within the pump itself can fail. Should the seal fail, there is a weep hole in the water pump housing that allows coolant to escape (hence the aforementioned pink staining).
