Land Rover Monthly - - Letters -

My father is about to retire and I am going to take him on a trip across Europe in my Series III diesel (fitted with a 2.5-litre engine).

I’m planning to catch a ferry to Spain, then travelling through the Pyrenees and then on to the Alps. There are a number of historical forts we wish to visit, as well as a number of other activities.

What advice does LRM have for doing this kind of trip for the first time?

What kind of work should I do on the truck beforehand?

What spares should I bring? Is there anything I should look out for in Europe?

Will there be mechanics in France and Spain (and potentially Northern Italy) that can be trusted to work on Land Rovers?

What else should I consider? Rupert Molyneux (via email) Any road trip through mountainous terrain in a diesel-powered Series III (presumably naturally aspirated?) isn’t to be undertaken lightly. It will be very slow on uphill slogs and may overheat.

As you are doing this for the first time, we recommend joining one of the organised convoys run by Land Rover clubs and 4x4 tour specialists.
