PRESERVING ARCHES

-

An arch is an ideal way of creating a beautiful feature in the garden, adding height and structure while supporting a profusion of climbing plants, including sumptuous rambling roses, vigorous clematis, fragrant honeysuckle and scrambling sweet peas. Late autumn, when plants are dormant, is the best time to carry out essential maintenance to ensure the arch can withstand the bracing winds and harsh weather to come. As leaves fall and climbing plants begin to fade, any potential damage will be easier to spot and can be treated without disturbing the plants. Any fixings should be tightened and joins checked for structural damage. For metal arches, rust can be removed with a wire brush and cleaned to prolong their life. Wooden arches should be treated with a natural preserve for protection.
