Search is on for Vale’s next singing sensation
Never mind auditioning for the X Factor – an Alexandria pub is looking for homegrown talent as it launches a competition to find the Vale’s next big star. The Laughing Fox has announced the Fox Factor – in a bid to find up to 48 budding singers to battle it out for a chance to win £500. The competition will run over four weeks and will involve up to 12 acts belting out their hearts to land a slot in the semi-finals before the grand finale. Michael Kelly, manager of the popular Bridge Street bar, said the contest, which is open to anyone over the age of 14, will show there’s more to pubs than being hang-outs for the older generation. He explained: “We are offering a fantastic prize of £500 so it is definitely worth signing up to our competition for a chance to walk away with large amount of cash.
“We really want to drum up some support for local pubs because they are slowly dying out.
“A lot of people will go out into Glasgow for nights out instead of their local and we want to show them they don’t need to leave their town.
“Many will also go to supermarkets to pick up drink and have it at home but it’s not the same as going down to your local and being surrounded by good company.”
He pointed out that younger people often dodge public houses in the town, saying: “Pubs still have a stigma attached to them as being places old men go to but we are moving away from that and organising a number of different events to attract more younger people.
“We have three pubs in the Vale so there is something different happening at each one.”
The Old Vale Bar on Main Street is hosting a Famous Lovers Theme Night on Saturday, February 18, with punters invited to dress up as famous couples, past or present.
There will be a prize for the best dressed couple and a karaoke at 9pm.
The Pawn Lounge meanwhile is holding a Great British Bake Off style competition, with more details set to be announced soon.
Michael said there’s already been lots of interest in the singing competition and is urging those interested to sign up as soon as possible to ensure a slot. The contest will begin on Friday, March 3 at 8pm and will consist of four weeks of auditions.
Each week will be limited to 12 singers who will perform one song before a panel of judges, and the best three singers from each audition will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be hosted on March 31.
The top six performers will progress to the final on Friday, April 7.
And everyone will be able to enjoy a sing-song, with a karaoke open each competition night.
Michael added: “It seems to be hitting the right note with a lot of enquiries coming in already and we are expecting a full house so please get in touch to register.
Anybody interested should contact Michael on 01389 752242, drop into the pub or message the Laughing Fox on their Facebook page.
