“We made sure we won the right for the proposals to be considered as a major service change and delayed the closure plans until the national review was completed.
“The number of births at the Vale of Leven Hospital has continued to fall due to the uncertainty caused by the closure plans and, unless we can reverse the decline, these proposals could resurface in future. The Scottish Government must work urgently with the health board to put a plan in place to increase birth numbers and deliver on the promise they made in the Vision for the Vale to promote the service to a wider area, including Clydebank.”
A total of 76 recommendations were made in the Best Start review of maternity and neonatal services, including that “each NHS board should ensure they are able to provide the full range of choice of place of birth within their region”.
The document also recommended improved continuity of care, with women having a primary midwife throughout their pregnancy.
