Fifty-five mile diversion plan

Lennox Herald - - NEWS -

Motorists could face a 55mile diversion amid plans to close part of the A82 after a safety barrier was damaged near Loch Lomond.

Bear Scotland wants to shut the major road between Tarbet and Crianlarich over two weeks in November.

The proposals would see traffic diverted through the A83, A819, A85 and A82 for a range of works to be carried out.

The £885,000 programme will also see a list of other road improvements take place, including road resurfacing, upgrades to white line markings, drainage works and road sign replacements and repairs.

Temporary traffic lights have been in place on the road since a lorry went through the barrier near a holiday park in May.

The HGV went down the embankment and was stopped from entering the loch by a tree, about 3ft from the water’s edge.

North West representative for BEAR Scotland Eddie Ross said: “We only ever close roads when it is essential. In this case the barrier that needs to be replaced is so close to the loch and is in such a restricted space that it is unsafe for our teams to work there with heavy machinery at night time.

“This means daytime working is the only option.

”We’ve taken steps to avoid working over the summer and October holidays, when traffic flows are generally busier.”

Works are planned to take place over 12 days between Monday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 21, 8am to 7pm, weekdays only.

Bear Scotland has launched a consultation on the proposals for residents and businesses. Feedback can be sent to: A82 South Consultation bearscot
