Phone seller John ‘rang off’ to build his own award-winning outdoor business
A Balloch man who swapped the rat race for the wilds of Loch Lomond to set up his own outdoor firm has won a top award.
Cooped-up for 12 hours a day selling phones in Braehead shopping centre, John Stevenson was determined to ditch his job and “go wild”.
Seven years on, he is running one-man adventure operation Experience Scotland’sWild.
An experienced traveller, who has visited the fjords of New Zealand and the beaches of Hawaii, John said Loch Lomond trumps them all and he is committed to proving this to others on wild walking tours with a difference.
Last year he scooped a tourism award fromVisitScotland and last week he was recognised at the ScottishThistle Awards regional final.
John was namedTourism and Hospitality Hero for his work with Experience Scotland’sWild. The award celebrates an individual on the front line of the customer service experience.
Judges described John as“an excellent example of pride in work and country”.
John will now go on to fly the flag forWest Dunbartonshire, and the wider west region, at the glittering national final of the ScottishThistle Awards at the EICC next March.
