Phone seller John ‘rang off’ to build his own award-win­ning out­door busi­ness

A Bal­loch man who swapped the rat race for the wilds of Loch Lomond to set up his own out­door firm has won a top award.

Cooped-up for 12 hours a day sell­ing phones in Brae­head shop­ping cen­tre, John Steven­son was de­ter­mined to ditch his job and “go wild”.

Seven years on, he is run­ning one-man ad­ven­ture op­er­a­tion Ex­pe­ri­ence Scot­land’sWild.

An ex­pe­ri­enced trav­eller, who has vis­ited the fjords of New Zealand and the beaches of Hawaii, John said Loch Lomond trumps them all and he is com­mit­ted to prov­ing this to oth­ers on wild walk­ing tours with a dif­fer­ence.

Last year he scooped a tourism award fromVisitS­cot­land and last week he was recog­nised at the Scot­tishThis­tle Awards re­gional fi­nal.

John was namedTourism and Hospitality Hero for his work with Ex­pe­ri­ence Scot­land’sWild.The award cel­e­brates an in­di­vid­ual on the front line of the cus­tomer ser­vice ex­pe­ri­ence.

Judges de­scribed John as“an ex­cel­lent ex­am­ple of pride in work and coun­try”.

John will now go on to fly the flag forWest Dun­bar­ton­shire, and the wider west re­gion, at the glit­ter­ing national fi­nal of the Scot­tishThis­tle Awards at the EICC next March.
