Relaunch of sports club

Lennox Herald - - FIT IS FUN - Carla Talbot

Over 40 youngsters joined in the fun as West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club celebrated the relaunch of their popular junior section.

Coaches at the club – who already have a successful adults section – were delighted with the response to the classes for younger athletes and are hoping to recruit more kids who want to get involved in sport.

A team of 10 dedicated coaches and volunteers have been working hard behind the scenes for a year to get the club back up and running ahead of the 20th anniversary next year.

The historic club is already in line to have access to the new state-of-the-art sports facility at Posties Park, and are now hoping to encourage as many youngsters as possible to lace up their trainers and enjoy sports ahead of the £1.7million facility opening next year.

And their first block, which runs from October until December, proved such a hit that spaces filled up on the first session.

Coach and chairperson of the club Laura Young, who was a member for 11 years, said: “We got a brilliant response. So much so that we are currently full.

“The junior section used to be really popular but due to a lack of volunteers we couldn’t keep it going.

“Now that we have the 20th anniversary coming up next year, we want to push to grow the club again and get as many young people involved as we can.

“We can’t wait until Posties Park is up and running as that is going to provide a brilliant opportunity for us. The facilities will be amazing.”

The junior athletics club runs every Tuesday night from 7 to 8pm at Dumbarton Academy, giving children aged from eight to 12 the chance to develop their sporting skills.

Our photographer Colin Garvie went along to their first session on October 24 to capture some of the activities on offer.

Laura added: “Athletics is one of the most fundamental sports out there for kids to get involved in as it can help develop skills in all other sports.

“It’s also great for them to be part of a club and build their social skills too. It’s a fantastic club and we just want it to be as successful as possible.”
