MSP Jackie calls for transparency

Residents at a care home in Alexandria have died after an outbreak of Covid-19.

Balquhidder House Care Home is the latest in our area to be hit by the deadly virus. But the number of people who have died has not been confirmed despite enquiries.

This has led to calls from MSP Jackie Baillie for greater transparency.

A spokesman for the care home operator said no details would be released “out of respect” for residents but stated, in response to reports, “there have not been ‘deaths numbering in the late teens’”.

Other care homes to report deaths include Castle View and Crosslet House care homes in Dumbarton.

Jackie (left) said: “Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the families of those who have passed away.

“There needs to be complete transparency about what is going on in our care homes, which is currently sadly lacking locally.”

A care home in Alexandria is the latest to report deaths to Covid-19 – with bosses assuring they have brought it under control.

The Care Inspectorate confirmed there have been “tragic deaths” due to coronavirus at Balquhidder House Care Home, run by Handsale Limited.

The number of residents who have died has not been confirmed despite our enquiries.

A spokesman for the care home issued a statement refuting reports that the number was in the “late high teens”.

MSP Jackie Baillie told the Lennox Herald that she heard the deaths were in this region.

Neither Handsale or West Dunbartonshire Council confirmed figures however a spokesman for the firm stated the number was not this high.

He said: “Balquhidder House, like many care homes in the country, has been affected by Covid-19. The measures we have implemented at the home have proven effective at bringing things under control.

“We have had open channels of communication with family members of our beloved residents throughout and we would like to extend our sincerest thanks as they have been extraordinarily wonderful in their support.

“It is out of respect for them and their loved ones ’privacy that we will not discuss any details, however we can categorically state that there have not been ‘deaths numbering in the late teens’.

“We would also like to say thank you to the Care Inspectorate and the local Health and Social Care Partnership, in particular our GPs, the team at the Public Health Protection Unit and the team at the local testing hub who have been very supportive.”

Deputy Scottish Labour leader Baillie says care homes are at the epicentre of the Covid-19 and called for more transparency over the impact. Other care homes to report deaths include CastleView and Crosslet House care homes in Dumbarton.

Jackie said: “With every week that passes more deaths are occurring in our care homes, and this is despite the efforts of our hardworking care staff.

“This week there have been reports of deaths in the high teens at Balquhidder Care Home but because neither the council nor the care home will confirm the number it is difficult to verify. Whatever the number, this is the loss of loved ones and our thoughts and sympathies go out to the families of those who have passed away.

“There needs to be complete transparency about what is going on in our care homes, which is currently sadly lacking locally.”

A Care Inspectorate spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the tragic deaths of residents at this care home as a result of suspected cases of Covid-19.

“We have been notified of the circumstances and we are in contact with the care service and the local health and social care partnership during this difficult time.”
