Say A bigger hole in the market
We, the ‘Grumpy Old Men of Bath’, had lunch together this week. I tabled two topics for discussion.
1 In or out of the European market?
2 Shrinkflation. “What the heck is that?” they cried out.
I had prepared myself for this reaction, so I had with me a copy of Let’s Talk with your article on Shrinkflation (The Last Word, March).
I drained my pint whilst they read it out loud. Okay, we now know what it is.
One GOM said: “I can tell you a story where giving exactly the same made greater profit.”
Another round of Adnams Broadside was ordered and we settled down again to listen to what he had to say.
“Well now, there was a soap company that made bottled washing up liquid. Seems the company put a suggestion box up in the factory requesting ideas from its staff, on how the company could increase its sales.
“A worker dropped in the box a small piece of paper upon it was written ‘Make the hole bigger’!”
Sales went up, but no extra product needed to be added. He eventually became a member of their ideas sub committee.
