Who’s wearing the trousers?

Trousers ... we all love them, they’re the easiest choice when it comes to daytime fashion, covering up all manner of worries and woes. But we’re all made in different shapes and sizes, and there’s not really one trouser style that fits all.

As we age, our bodies change shape, especially around the midrift, so now is a good time, as we head into a new spring season, to determine what body shape we are and what type of trousers suits our personality, shape and style. Let’s break down the five main body shapes and find out which one has our own name on it.

The best place to start is with me. Like Angela Rippon, I’ve got long legs ... dancer’s legs! Our body shape is tall and straight, which calls for trousers that look great with a high waist. The only drawback is that sometimes trousers aren’t long enough when you want them to be. But a new company hit the market in January 2017, which could provide just the answer. What I didn’t realise is that in the UK, there are more than 1.8 million women over 5ft 9ins - precisely my height - who struggle to find clothing to fit. Sleeves are never long enough, trousers cut off just above the ankle ... it really is very frustrating.

Laura Crabb has founded a new company to provide beautiful clothing for longer and leaner frames. She says: “Getting dressed in the morning shouldn’t be the first thing a woman struggles with each day – frankly, we’ve got better things to do. If you’re in ill-fitting clothes, it bothers you and restricts you from being your best possible self.” And she’s quite right! Laura decided to do something about it and launched North Clothing, an online company which caters for women, 5ft 9ins and over.
