As Showaddywaddy prepares to perform in Norfolk, Dave Bartram, the band’s manager and former lead singer, speaks to Rachel Banham.
S howaddywaddy fans can look forward to an evening of nostalgia and rock ‘n’ roll at Norwich Theatre Royal on October 29.
So says Dave Bartram, the group’s lead vocalist for many years, who is now their manager.
“The boys go out and do a twohour show and it’s just non-stop rock ‘n’ roll. All the hits and a few surprises along the way, shall I say,” Dave says. “It’s a fun night out, basically.”
Showaddywaddy has been on tour since 1973 and is as popular as ever.
The show features hits including Under The Moon Of Love, Three Steps To Heaven, Pretty Little Angel Eyes and Hey Rock And Roll.
Dave’s last performance with Showaddywaddy was in December 2011 and Andy Pelos is now the lead vocalist.
Dave says: “I had 38 fantastic years, so I look back at that with great fondness - but now I firmly wear my manager’s hat. It’s kind of nice to be still associated and still to see the guys.”
A large part of Dave’s boyhood was spent in Norfolk, as his father had a caravan at East Runton, of which he has “very, very fond memories”.
“I’ve always had a very strong affiliation with Norfolk,” he says. “In recent years, my wife and I often go across to Aldeburgh, which I really like as well, in Suffolk. I know the area well – it’s kind of, to my mind, more unspoiled than the majority of coastline in the UK.”
Dave has written two books since he stopped performing and is currently working on his first piece of fiction – a murder mystery meets rock ‘n’ roll.
He is also regularly adding dates to Showaddywaddy’s tour schedule.
“It just seems to be as popular as ever,” he says. “It’s great. There’s a lot of life left in Showaddywaddy yet.”
