I was at the opening of the new Methodist Church on Saturday, July 16, 1966 at Downham Market. The opening was by Mrs Mary E Osborne and dedication by Rev Hubert J Martin, chairman of the District.
I was with my late father, Mr Alfred Handscombe, a local preacher in the Downham Market district. My dad received a certificate for long service in 1967. He started in 1928 (40 years). Sadly, he passed away in 1969.
I have the order of service leaflet. I was also at the stone-laying ceremony and service of dedication. We then proceeded to Downham Market Town Hall for a short service. During the service Rev Martin received gift envelopes (money for the new church). After the service, we enjoyed refreshments provided by the ladies of the town’s three Methodist churches.
Many happy and sad times I have been to in all the churches, including the Methodist Church in Paradise Road, built in 1965.
