the record­break­ing proa of Nor­folk helms­man Ti­mothy Col­man - who later be­came Sir Ti­mothy, the Lord Lieu­tenant of Nor­folk - broke the world sail­ing speed record in Port­land Har­bour, Dorset, on Oc­to­ber 4. The 60ft craft sailed the course at 33.4 knots to beat the ex­ist­ing record . . . which had been set by Col­man in the same boat the pre­vi­ous year.
