A number that sticks in the mind, the Co-op ‘divi’

Let's Talk - - POSTBAG -

Memories returned as I read Derek James’ article on the Co- op in the September issue.

570867. No not my army number, not my NHS number and not my NI number which I’ve now forgotten! It was our family’s Co- op number which I still remember from my childhood – and that’s a long time ago.

The baker and the milkman delivered daily and on Friday presented their bills for the week. The money was paid and the Co-op number was recorded as it was for any other purchases from the Co- op. Then, on the all important annual Divi day, we were told the amount we had spent during the year and the amount of the Divi we had earned.

There was always much discussion on whether to spend it or save it but I recall that one year we had purchased a threepiece suite from the Co- op and the Divi was considerable.

It was spent on new shoes and clothes – all from the Co- op and the basis for next year’s Divi! LES WOOD Haverhill
