Each April, de­sign in­sid­ers gather in Mi­lan as brands from all over the world launch their lat­est col­lec­tions. Ev­ery­one’s ea­ger to see what the new trends will be, from the most pop­u­lar colours and ma­te­ri­als to the way the stands are styled (think glossy, lux­u­ri­ous room sets – no space or ex­pense spared). This year sig­nals a re­turn to happy colour. The trend for mil­len­nial pink mor­phed into a combo of pas­tel shades in­spired by Fifties de­sign. Green reigned supreme as the must-have hue, while ex­otic mar­bles and jew­ellike light­ing are set to bring op­u­lence back into the home. For all th­ese trends and more, read on…

FIFTIES RE­VIVAL

This pretty colour pal­ette harks back to mid-cen­tury de­sign at its most chic. The ul­tra-fifties combo of pink and grey is still go­ing strong, but is en­hanced with off­beat shades such as ter­ra­cotta, olive green and chalky yel­low. Mi­lan duo Stu­diopepe’s de­sign con­cept apart­ment, called The Visit, was a master­class in retro colours, with mu­rals on walls, fur­ni­ture clas­sics and mod­ern tex­tiles. Gal­lotti&radice and Natuzzi of­fered up arm­chairs in punchy burnt or­ange and zesty green. Kartell chose ice-cream pas­tels for its Jel­lies table­ware by Pa­tri­cia Urquiola, while Di­more Stu­dio’s pat­terned tiles were one of the most In­sta­grammed launches.
