3 Another favourite French king is be­ing cel­e­brated this year, as 2015 marks the 300th an­niver­sary of the death of Louis XIV, known as ‘le Roi Soleil’ (‘the Sun King’). Made king at the age of four, he ruled France from 1643 un­til his death in 1715 and un­der his reign France be­came one of the ma­jor pow­ers in Europe. The mag­nif­i­cent Palace of Ver­sailles ( pic­tured above) was built un­der his reign and will fea­ture ex­hi­bi­tions to mark the an­niver­sary. These in­clude the re­open­ing of the re­stored Louis XIV rooms and an ex­hi­bi­tion ex­plor­ing the im­me­di­ate af­ter­math of the king’s death. www.chateau­ver­sailles.fr
